The real-life people, actors, and historical figures behind One Piece characters.
The Shichibukai are not an original concept. Every warlord — Crocodile, Mihawk, Moria, Kuma, Hancock, Doflamingo, Jinbe — maps precisely onto a character from the 1993 Super Famicom RPG Romancing SaGa 2. The abilities, the personalities, the role each plays in the story, the order in which they are replaced after being defeated: all of it follows the game. This is One Piece’s backbone.
Sanji’s name encodes his origin: ‘San’ (three) in Japanese points to the third cook. But his character draws from Marco Polo — the traveler who crossed the entire known world in pursuit of knowledge, whose journey took him through islands that parallel the Grand Line route. Zeff’s model is the real-world story of a chef-pirate who gave everything he had for a child he barely knew.
Trafalgar Law’s full name means Napoleon’s nemesis. X Drake’s devil fruit comes from a Spanish nickname. Basil Hawkins carries two pirates in one name. Jewelry Bonney’s disappearance mirrors history. The Worst Generation’s real-world models run deeper than you’d expect.

Bentham’s name comes from Jeremy Bentham, the 18th-century philosopher who advocated decriminalization of homosexuality when it was a death penalty offense. His body is still on display at UCL London by his own request. The chapter where Bon Kurei reappears is numbered 666. The kanji for Buddha (仏) is written with the characters ィ and ム. And both Bon and Im share an obsession with Vivi.
Fans assumed the Five Elders were named after planets. But look closer: Jay Garcia Saturn = Jerry Garcia of Grateful Dead. Marcus Mars = Bruno Mars. Shepherd Ju Peter = Peter Gabriel. Topman Warcury = Freddie Mercury. Saint Ethanbaron V. Nasujuro = Carlos Santana. Oda built his favorite musicians into the highest authority in One Piece.
The Blackbeard Pirates’ original five members are built from two sources simultaneously: real historical Caribbean buccaneers from the Golden Age
Shaka’s design is Daft Punk. Pythagoras is Ganbare Robocon by the creator of Cyborg 009. Edison is Robokko Beaton — made by the man who brought Lupin III to anime. York is Guzura, a forgotten Showa monster made by the director of Speed Racer. Every satellite design traces back to a specific chapter of Japanese anime history.
Roronoa Zoro draws from three sources simultaneously: the fictional Spanish swordsman Zorro (origin of the name), the historical Japanese swordsman Miyamoto Musashi (three-sword technique and philosophy), and the political revolutionary Ryoma Sakamoto (the outsider who changed the world from outside the system). Together they define exactly what Zoro is.
