I’ve started to think Blackbeard and Hancock should end up as a couple.
So in this article, I’ll be covering:
- Luffy as Thunder God Zeus
- Blackbeard as Poseidon
- Will Blackbeard steal a third ability from Dragon?
- Hancock as Medusa
- Medusa was Poseidon’s mistress
- Why they’re a perfect match
Luffy as Thunder God Zeus
From Gear 4 onward, Luffy began wrapping himself in a “Halo-like mantle.”
His appearance resembles a heavenly being — an angel or a thunder deity from Eastern and Western mythology alike.
When Luffy awakened as the “Sun God Nika,” he wielded lightning like the Greek god Zeus. The “Fujin and Raijin” parallel across East and West is unmistakable.
Which naturally leads to the question: if Luffy has a divine archetype, shouldn’t his rival Blackbeard as well?
If Luffy is the “Thunder God,” is Blackbeard the “Wind God”?
The problem is, Blackbeard’s only wind-like attribute right now is his laugh — “Zehahaha.”
So if Luffy is “Zeus,” then Blackbeard is…
Blackbeard as Poseidon
Poseidon, ruler of all continents and oceans, was called “Zeus Enalios (Zeus of the Sea)” — a god whose power and prestige rivaled Zeus himself.
If Zeus rules the sky, Poseidon rules the earth and sea.
His temperament is savage — famous as a “wild god” who terrorizes people by triggering earthquakes and storms. Sound familiar? That’s Blackbeard.
Speaking of “causing storms” — there’s a popular theory that Luffy’s father Dragon is a Wind Devil Fruit user.
If Blackbeard were to steal Dragon’s wind ability, he’d be able to command both earthquakes and storms — the complete package of Poseidon.
That would also complete the “Zeus vs Poseidon” dynamic between him and Luffy.
And with the “Wind God” element added, their clash would perfectly mirror the “Fujin and Raijin” painting.
It would also deepen Luffy’s personal stake in the fight — making Blackbeard not just a rival, but the man who killed his brother and his father.
Story-wise, that’s a really compelling direction.
For the record: the wind god appears in cultures worldwide. In Greek mythology, he’s Typhon — the only being ever said to have defeated Zeus.
Final Fantasy’s iconic boss Sephiroth draws from the same Western wind god tradition.
And that same serpent god Typhon — the only one to ever beat Zeus in Greek mythology — connects directly to the next point.
Because the serpent god Typhon was…
Hancock as Medusa
Medusa — the monster famous for turning anyone who meets her gaze to stone. That’s clearly Hancock’s archetype.
But here’s what’s interesting: Medusa was originally human. In fact, she was known as an extraordinarily beautiful woman.
One day, the womanizing Poseidon found her and ordered her to become his lover. Unable to defy a god, Medusa submitted to him inside a nearby temple.
But that temple was Athena’s.
Athena, enraged that her temple was defiled in her absence — but unable to confront the higher-ranking god Poseidon — directed all of her fury at Medusa instead.
She transformed Medusa into a horrifying monster, cursed never to be loved again.
This backstory mirrors Hancock’s — used and discarded by the World Nobles, self-styled “gods,” at her most vulnerable.
(If you want to dive deeper, the manga adaptation does a great job showing just how truly awful the gods of Greek mythology were.)
Blackbeard and Hancock Are a Perfect Match
Matching red outfits. The height difference is just right. Honestly, they look great together.
If this scene turns out to be “Blackbeard going to rescue Hancock from the Navy” — as some fans have predicted — there’s a real chance they become a couple.
I can’t wait to see how the truth unfolds.
And on that note, we’ll wrap things up for today. Thank you!
