Blackbeard and Luffy Are Perfect Mirror Images
In terms of physique, age, and taste, Blackbeard and Luffy are portrayed as opposites in every way.
But when you compare their pirate careers, the similarities are surprisingly striking:
- Destroyed Drum Kingdom
- Defeated a Yonko’s commander in a 1v1
- Found allies in Impel Down Level 6
- Attacked government institutions
- Hostage negotiations that got them ambushed by an Admiral
- Recruited former Warlords
- Mastered 2 types of powers
Let me go through them in chronological order.
The 5-Person Crew That Destroyed Drum Kingdom
Blackbeard’s crew attacked Drum Kingdom. Wapol, sensing he couldn’t win, abandoned his people and fled abroad.
While Teach technically “destroyed” Drum Kingdom, citizens felt more relief than despair.
Wapol’s tyrannical rule had been such a burden that Blackbeard’s raid — still mysterious in purpose — ended up saving the people.
Meanwhile, Luffy directly blasted King Wapol to stop his restoration of power.
Since Drum Kingdom was later renamed Sakura Kingdom, you could say Luffy destroyed Drum Kingdom too.
Similarities:
- A 5-person crew destroyed Drum Kingdom
- Both captains have “D” in their name
Defeated a Yonko’s Commander in a 1v1
Blackbeard VS Ace:
- Ace came to avenge Sachi, who was killed by Teach
- 1v1 against Ace, Whitebeard’s 2nd Division Commander and a Yonko’s top fighter
- Sun vs Black Hole — a cosmic Logia clash
- By defeating Ace, Teach earned the Warlord title
Luffy VS Katakuri:
- Luffy chased Big Mom’s crew to rescue Sanji
- 1v1 against Katakuri, Big Mom’s Sweet Three Generals and a Yonko’s top fighter
- Rubber vs Mochi — a similar Paramecia showdown
- By defeating Katakuri, Luffy earned a 1.5B bounty and the title of Great Pirate
Found Allies in Impel Down Level 6
Teach forced the Level 6 prisoners to fight to the death, and recruited the 4 survivors:
- Shiryu (traitor guard who joined Teach)
- Sanjuan Wolf
- Vasco Shot
- Avalo Pizarro
Plus Shiryu, the guard who betrayed the government — making it 5 new crewmates.
Luffy brought Level 6 prisoners to the battlefield at Marineford, and Jinbe — who survived — later joined his crew.
Declared War at a Government Institution
After obtaining the Gura Gura powers, Teach destroyed Marine HQ and officially declared war while resigning from the Warlords.
Luffy burned the World Government flag at Enies Lobby and declared war loud and proud.
Used Hostages for Negotiation — But Got Ambushed by an Admiral
Teach used Bonney — crucial to the government for controlling Bartholomew Kuma — as a hostage to demand a Navy warship in exchange.
The result: Admiral Akainu showed up with warships and attacked. Negotiations failed.
Luffy and Law’s alliance used Caesar Clown — crucial to Doflamingo for SMILE production — as a hostage to demand Doffy’s resignation from the Warlords.
The result: Admiral Fujitora arrived. Negotiations failed.
Technically Law was the mastermind, but since they were in an alliance, Luffy was also a party to it.
Childhood
A boy with “D” in his name, wearing a hat, sitting with knees up, crying.
For Luffy, this is the scene where he vowed to become a pirate. For Blackbeard, it might be a moment where he resolved on some kind of revenge.
Luffy’s image of what a pirate should be was solidified by Ace’s words in this scene.
“I don’t know what killed Sabo… but it was surely something opposite to freedom!” “We must live so we have no regrets!” “Someday we’ll set out to sea and live as we please — more freely than anyone!”
“That means making enemies of all kinds of people. Even gramps becomes our enemy! It’s life or death!” “We’re going to be pirates!”
Encountered a Yonko at a Young Age
Young Teach had nowhere to go, so he begged to be taken aboard Whitebeard’s ship. Kind-hearted Whitebeard let the child on board.
Young Luffy begged to join Shanks’ crew. The calm Shanks refused, saying it was too harsh for a child.
Mastered 2 Types of Powers
With the mysterious trait that his “body structure is abnormal,” Teach obtained both the Yami Yami (Logia) and Gura Gura (Paramecia) Devil Fruits.
With the mysterious trait that he is a “god with a rubber body,” Luffy obtained both the Gomu Gomu (Paramecia) and Hito Hito Model: Nika (Zoan) powers.
Earned the Emperor Title
- Blackbeard defeated Whitebeard and dominated his remnants, earning the Emperor title
- Luffy defeated the strongest creature Kaido in a 1v1, earning the Emperor title
Recruited Former Warlords
After the Wano arc ended and the final saga began, the power map changed dramatically.
With new Emperors in place, each is recruiting former Warlords:
- Buggy recruited Crocodile and Mihawk
- Luffy recruited Jinbe
- (Setting aside the Red Hair Pirates for now)
Teach is recruiting Moria — will we see how that turns out in the Egghead arc?
Blackbeard and Luffy have been depicted as complete contrasts. Even their colors are opposites — white and black.
They really are rivals in the most satisfying sense.
And that wraps it up for today. See you next week!
