The Legend of Davy Jones
“Davy Jones’ Locker” is an old sailor’s legend.
According to the tale, Davy Jones was a deceitful, greedy quartermaster who stashed away the crew’s belongings and treasures in his own locker. Cursed by the devil to live forever at the bottom of the sea, he became the eternal keeper of all ships, sailors, and treasure that sank beneath the waves.
Among pirates, the phrase meant:
“I’ll send you to Davy Jones’ Locker!” = “I’ll sink you to the depths and kill you!”
If you think about it, Oda seems to split this legend across characters:
- A lying quartermaster → Usopp
- A greedy hoarder of treasure → Nami
And since Rocks D. Xebec himself revered Davy Jones, perhaps this legendary figure embodies Oda’s image of “the ultimate pirate.”
Disney Homage in Fish-Man Island
The Disney version of Davy Jones from Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest clearly influenced One Piece.
- In Disney, Davy Jones captains the Flying Dutchman.
- In One Piece, the cursed ship appears under Vander Decken IX, doomed to wander the deep sea under a divine curse.
Even more:
- Disney’s Davy Jones = octopus face, crab claw hand.
- One Piece’s Crab-Hand Gyro mirrors this design.
- His crew is destroyed by Hody Jones, whose name nearly matches Davy Jones.
Oda essentially split Disney’s Davy Jones into multiple characters and scenarios.
Fish-Man Island itself is filled with Disney homages — “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea,” “Mermaid Lagoon Theater,” “Prometheus Volcano.”
Why Would Rocks Worship Davy Jones?
At first glance, Rocks’ ambition to become “King of the World” doesn’t really match a lying, greedy quartermaster. But let’s reinterpret the myth:
“Everything that sinks to the sea belongs to me.”
Ships, treasure… even people, nations, continents, the world itself.
If over half the planet sank beneath the ocean, then Davy Jones effectively became ruler of most of the world. Interpreted this way, Rocks’ dream and Davy Jones’ “rule over the deep” align perfectly.
