One Piece: Who Do the Straw Hats Marry? [Luffy’s 7 Bride Candidates]

When you translate the name of the Sun God “Nika,” it actually means “marriage.” So who ends up marrying whom?

Characters Who Got Married

Here’s a roundup of characters who got married in cover page stories after their appearance in the main story.

Wapol & Miss Universe (real name: Kinderella)

Source: ONE PIECE, Eiichiro Oda/Shueisha

“Tin-Man Wapol” — Former King of the Drum Kingdom, now King of the Evil Black Drum Kingdom.

After being sent flying by Luffy, he clawed his way back from homelessness to kingship — a man of incredible luck.

The alloy “Wapometal,” which kick-started his rise to power, is produced inside Wapol’s own body. Which means… even though he’s king, he might be the hardest-working one of all?

Mr. 9 & Miss Monday

Source: ONE PIECE, Eiichiro Oda/Shueisha

“Mr. 9” — Partner of “Miss Wednesday,” a.k.a. Vivi. “I don’t understand the situation at all… but we’ve been partners a long time. I’ll buy you time!! Get out of here!!”

“Miss Monday” — After being defeated by the swordsman Zoro, she was set to be punished for mission failure. “If I’m going down anyway, I’d rather take a hit protecting a friend!!”

A couple who’ll put it all on the line for their mates — true respect!

Sai & Baby 5

Source: ONE PIECE, Eiichiro Oda/Shueisha

“Don Sai” — 13th Leader of the Happosui Army and Captain of the 3rd ship in the Straw Hat Grand Fleet. His passionate personality got so fired up mid-battle that he accidentally proposed — and it stuck.

“Baby 5” — Born into poverty and abandoned by her own mother to reduce mouths to feed. Her mother’s words — “You’re useless, nobody needs you” — left a lasting trauma that made her desperately crave being needed.

All things considered, a surprisingly perfect match.

Lola & Gotti

Source: ONE PIECE, Eiichiro Oda/Shueisha

“Proposal Lola” — Captain of the Rolling Pirates, 23rd daughter of the Charlotte family, and twin sister of Chiffon. Her habit of proposing to every man she met led to 4,446 rejections.

“Gotti” — Member of the Fire Tank Pirates, age 33. Had a thing for Chiffon.

Makino & ???

Source: ONE PIECE, Eiichiro Oda/Shueisha

“Makino” — Owner of “Party’s Bar” in Foosha Village. At some point, she was seen holding a baby, with a ring on her left ring finger. Since she called Shanks “cool” back in Volume 1, rumors spread that Shanks was her husband.

However, wedding rings are typically worn by both partners. If Shanks — who lost his left arm — were giving a ring, he’d probably choose a different kind of paired accessory.

And since Shanks hasn’t been seen wearing any accessories, Makino’s husband is likely someone else entirely.

Predicted Marriage Partners for the Straw Hat Crew

Sanji & Pudding

Source: ONE PIECE, Eiichiro Oda/Shueisha

The wedding was crashed — but Sanji proposed to Pudding entirely of his own will. Pudding fell hard for Sanji too, so it’d be heartbreaking for it all to end with just a goodbye kiss that gets wiped from memory.

Just like Lola — the big sister figure Pudding admires — who found love on her own terms, I hope Pudding gets to marry the person she chose.

This is more of a wish than a prediction.

Zoro & Hiyori

Source: ONE PIECE, Eiichiro Oda/Shueisha

Momonosuke and Hiyori’s mother — formerly Amatsuki Toki — didn’t know which island she was born on, only that her parents’ homeland was Wano. She met Oden, the Shogun’s son, and married him.

Zoro and Hiyori are the reverse. Zoro was born and raised in Shimotsuki Village, which has roots in Wano, and he’s said to look strikingly like “Sword Saint” Shimotsuki Ryuma.

The Shimotsuki bloodline seems very likely — which would make him a fitting match for the princess of the Kozuki clan.

Usopp & Kaya

Source: ONE PIECE, Eiichiro Oda/Shueisha

Nobody’s going to argue with this one. And if Usopp ever makes Kaya unhappy, we’ll all take turns punching him.

Chopper & Milky

Source: ONE PIECE, Eiichiro Oda/Shueisha

Chopper has officially entered his mating season. His partner is Milky, a reindeer from the Mink Tribe.

Greeted with the Minks’ signature “Garchu” and then hit with “Milky Smile,” Chopper fell completely head over hooves.

In the cover page of Chapter 900, he’s seen trying to give her a single red rose — flower language for “love at first sight; there’s only you.”

Robin & Law

Source: ONE PIECE, Eiichiro Oda/Shueisha

Trafalgar D. Water Law, age 26. Nico Robin, age 30.

These two aren’t just a good match — their personalities and backstories are strikingly similar.

Whether their respective bosses got along… honestly hard to say.

But more importantly — Robin, who can sprout arms anywhere and in unlimited numbers, is the perfect assistant for Law and his Ope Ope no Mi.

“Scalpel,” “forceps,” “sweat” — she can handle every surgical demand at once, making her the ideal partner.

I really want to see these two end up together!

Not Crew Members, But Still Can’t Ignore

Vivi & Kohza

Source: ONE PIECE, Eiichiro Oda/Shueisha

Kohza worked as a rebel, but his real motivation was patriotism.

Good bloodlines too. Two people who love their country — a natural fit.

Smoker & Hina

Source: ONE PIECE, Eiichiro Oda/Shueisha

“White Hunter” Smoker, age 36.

“Black Cage” Hina, age 34.

Just the right age gap, and simply a great match.

Leo & Mansherry

Source: ONE PIECE, Eiichiro Oda/Shueisha

Just a matter of time. Once the Great War for the Straw Hat Grand Fleet is over, these two will definitely get together.

Hajrudin & Gill

Source: ONE PIECE, Eiichiro Oda/Shueisha

The way Gill looks at Hajrudin — that’s the gaze of a girl in love. The two of them grew up and joined the same crew.

An ideal relationship where the ship’s doctor Gill tends to Hajrudin’s battle wounds.

Hatchan & Camie

Source: ONE PIECE, Eiichiro Oda/Shueisha

Hatchan, age 38. Camie, age 18.

Camie doesn’t seem to mind.

Gaimon & Sarfunkle

Source: ONE PIECE, Eiichiro Oda/Shueisha

Even Gaimon found himself the perfect partner.

This shows that One Piece’s core theme of “two sides of the same coin” applies to romance as well.

Which means…

Luffy’s Partner Is…

The most commonly mentioned candidates for Luffy’s bride are:

  • The three princesses — Vivi, Shirahoshi, or Rebecca
  • The woman hopelessly in love with him — Hancock
  • His first kiss (sort of) — Reiju
  • There since Volume 1 — Alvida
  • One Piece’s heroine — Nami

Let’s look at each one.

The Three Princesses — Gratitude, Not Romance

Source: ONE PIECE, Eiichiro Oda/Shueisha

Personally, I’m sure he loves them each in his own way — but as princesses of World Government member nations, marrying a wanted pirate simply isn’t an option. These three are out of the running.

Hancock

Source: ONE PIECE, Eiichiro Oda/Shueisha

“The Pirate Empress”, age 31.

A legendary beauty hopelessly in love with Luffy, who keeps getting rejected.

The age gap is a bit too large. And since Luffy generally follows through on whatever he says, and he’s never said he’d marry her — it’s not happening.

Reiju

Source: ONE PIECE, Eiichiro Oda/Shueisha

“Poison Pink”, age 24.

Princess of the Germa Kingdom.

She’s Luffy’s first kiss (sort of) and Sanji’s sister. An interesting match — but it’d put Sanji in an awkward spot, so probably not.

Alvida

Source: ONE PIECE, Eiichiro Oda/Shueisha

“Iron Mace Alvida”, age 27.

The only woman Luffy has ever called “beautiful.” My personal #2 bride candidate for Luffy.

Source: ONE PIECE, Eiichiro Oda/Shueisha

But It Has to Be Nami

Source: ONE PIECE, Eiichiro Oda/Shueisha

The navigator who always takes the captain wherever he wants to go. She’s already playing the role of “wife” — and these two will never be apart.

There are a few other reasons too.

The One Sanji Would Accept

Source: ONE PIECE, Eiichiro Oda/Shueisha

The only person who could marry Nami that Sanji would actually be okay with is Luffy. Nobody else.

A Promise Made Before Her Parents

Source: ONE PIECE, Eiichiro Oda/Shueisha

The promise Luffy made to Genzo — who played the role of Nami’s father — at her mother’s grave.

“…If you ever take away Nami’s smile… I’ll come kill you myself!!”

“Well, I’m not planning to take it away…”

“Do you understand!!”

“…Understood.” *nod*

That’s basically the classic “May I have your daughter’s hand in marriage?” exchange. In other words, Luffy and Nami have official parental approval.

And on that note, that’s all for today!
