How the Mother Flame Is Made
Vegapunk’s dream was limitless, free energy.
The device he believed could be realized with an inextinguishable flame was already complete — but instead of peaceful use, it was exploited as the power source for an Ancient Weapon…
A story very much like Einstein and the atomic bomb.
I’m not sure if the way the Mother Flame is made will ever be depicted in the story, but it caught my curiosity, so I thought it through.
The Mother Flame’s Model Is a Nuclear Fusion Reactor
“Fusion Reactor,” read as “Power Plant” — The device housing the Mother Flame has the inscriptions “S-108” and “A&Mu.”
If I take these three pieces of information as clues…
- Same naming pattern as the Seraphim → clones of the Lunarian race
- Fusion Reactor → a type of nuclear reactor, specifically a nuclear fusion reactor → nuclear power generation device
- A&Mu → “A” and “Mu” → Atom → Astro Boy (Tetsuwan Atom)
Three new keywords emerge from this.
By the way, when I looked up “fusion reactor” on Wikipedia, it described the Mother Flame almost perfectly:
The fact that stars like the Sun radiate brilliance is entirely due to the energy generated by nuclear fusion reactions.
Astro Boy’s energy source is nuclear power.
Also, Albert Einstein — the leading candidate as the model for Vegapunk’s character — was involved in the development of the atomic bomb in Germany.
So there’s no doubt that the Mother Flame is modeled on nuclear power.
Does that mean even the way it’s made is based on the principles of nuclear fusion?
A Substitute for Nuclear Fusion
Nuclear fusion — I roughly understand it as “when atoms collide and fuse, an explosion occurs and heat is generated.”
So in the world of One Piece (modeled on the medieval Age of Sail), how would nuclear fusion be depicted in a manga-style way, with a mechanism readers can accept? I thought about it, and there was one. A foreshadowing.
The setting that if you eat two Devil Fruits, your body explodes violently.
Could this be reproduced by mixing two different types of Green Blood?
S-108
The Seraphim have flames burning on their backs, just like the Lunarian race. Each is modeled on one of the Seven Warlords of the Sea, with names like:
- S-Snake
- S-Hawk
- S-Shark
- S-Bear
A pattern combining the “S” of Seraphim with the animal in each Warlord’s name.
The “S-108” inscribed on the Mother Flame device follows the same pattern.
In other words, that flame is a clone of the Lunarian race — just like the Seraphim.
Mixed with the explosive energy from combining two different types of Green Blood, it creates a super-high-intensity flame clone.
That is the Mother Flame.
…or so I theorize.
