Devil Fruit Basics: A Quick Review
Conditions to become a Devil Fruit user:
- Any living creature that eats a Devil Fruit gains the ability
- Zoan-type fruits have a will of their own, so even inanimate objects can become users and move
- Ways to eat: swallow whole, take a bite, peel and eat only the fruit’s flesh, or drink the juice
- Abilities can be passed from parent to child
- Eating a Devil Fruit user grants the eater that ability as well
- Injecting a Paramecia user’s blood can replicate the same ability
These are the Devil Fruit transmission conditions established so far.
Chaka and Pell’s lineages in Arabasta have inherited the role of “Guardian Deities of Arabasta” alongside their Devil Fruit abilities for generations.
Van Augur also says he “took over” (the Flying Dutchman), suggesting the Mato Mato ability has been passed down from the original Vander Decken.
That said, the phrasing “took over” is interesting — it sounds almost like the Devil Fruit confirmed his willingness to accept it.
Perhaps when inheriting from a parent, there’s a kind of devil’s bargain — like the fruit asking “Do you want this power?”
(Side note: the original Vander Decken likely knew Poseidon’s secret because he was an ally of Joy Boy.)
Conditions to Lose Devil Fruit Powers
- A Devil Fruit can only exist once at a time, so it returns to fruit form after recognizing the user’s “death”
- After a user dies, it has been known to inhabit the nearest apple
- Immediately after death, it can be extracted from the corpse
So what exactly does a Devil Fruit recognize as its user’s “death”?
(Side note: threats like “Do as I say or I’ll kill you” worked on inanimate Zoan users too.)
The Definition of Death
In human terms, what constitutes “death” varies widely across religion, philosophy, theology, thanatology, law, forensics, and biology. But for a Devil Fruit’s definition of death, only biology applies.
Biologically, death is defined as:
- The heart stops (cardiac arrest)
- Blood circulation and oxygen supply (metabolism) cease
- Cell death occurs
- Brain death occurs
- The “irreversible cessation” of life-sustaining processes is death
In other words, from the Devil Fruit’s perspective: “The user’s consciousness disappeared some time after the heart stopped — this is the host’s death. Time to leave.”
Vegapunk must have hypothesized, tested, and even proven this.
From that, he would also have figured out how to prevent a Devil Fruit from recognizing its user’s biological death.
Otherwise, he would never have spoken of dreams like “having all of humanity continuously update Punk Records” — a dream that presupposes his own brain living forever.
In other words:
- The Devil Fruit cannot recognize Vegapunk’s death
- The Nomi Nomi no Mi cannot detect the death of Vegapunk’s main body (Stella)
- He figured out how to fool the Devil Fruit permanently
- He also arranged an environment where his brain would never die
- So even after Vegapunk’s death, Punk Records will live on forever
- It will become a data bank that all of humanity can access via brain waves
In other words, it’s exactly like modern smartphones, Google, and Wikipedia.
So what is this mechanism that keeps fooling the Devil Fruit?
Brain Extraction
Biological death begins with cardiac death. Brain death follows because the energy supply stops when the heart fails.
The reason brain death and cardiac death are linked is that they’re connected in one body.
So: separate the heart and brain.
Provide energy to the brain even without a heart.
Done. Both achieved.
Now, even if the heart stops, brain death won’t occur.
Since the Satellites other than Stella access and sync with the brain, consciousness won’t be interrupted either.
Therefore, the Devil Fruit cannot recognize the user’s death.
Turn the Satellites into robots, and they have no lifespan — immortal.
Since multiple genius minds share the same brain network, they can repair each other — truly immortal.
This makes Vegapunk and Punk Records eternal.
The details — maintaining the external brain’s environment using artificial organ technology, accessing the brain via brain waves using Den Den Mushi principles, and the Satellites using clone and cyborg technology — all seem plausible.
What the Gorosei Must Do
The Gorosei’s objectives in their conflict with Vegapunk are:
- Eliminating all who know the truth from 800 years ago
- Erasing every record, memory, and trace of that truth
So they need to eliminate all of Vegapunk and also destroy Punk Records, where those memories remain.
But Vegapunk, being the genius he is, naturally sensed the assassination coming.
If they’re going to silence him by killing him, he’ll create a voice that can’t be silenced even after death.
If Stella’s heart stops, he’ll force-broadcast his pre-recorded message to the entire world.
What a genius move — brilliantly devious.
And this countermeasure also shows his confidence that Stella’s death would have no effect on the brain.
Find the Broadcast Device
What the Gorosei need to do is stop the broadcast.
That’s why searching for “the room shown on the monitor” — the filming location — is pointless.
They’re too panicked to grasp the situation properly.
What they need to find is the Den Den Mushi recording the footage, or the Den Den Mushi transmitting the video and audio to the whole world!
Calm down!
The Future Built by a Genius Brain
A future where all of humanity continues to update and expand upon the vast knowledge Vegapunk accumulated.
As I mentioned earlier, this is essentially the present day.
A database that can answer anything with a search — accessible anytime, anywhere.
But how each person uses that information is up to them.
The free future Vegapunk dreamed of is already here.
Though there’s a famous anime with a similar premise, but a future with absolutely no freedom.
