Shanks’ Combat Style Revealed in FILM RED
ONE PIECE FILM RED gave us the most detailed look yet at Shanks in action. Based on the movie, here is a summary of his confirmed combat abilities:
1. Flight (Moonwalk / Geppo?) — Shanks was seen moving through the air, suggesting he may use Geppo or a similar technique.
2. Flaming Sword — His blade ignited with flames during battle, reminiscent of the “Foxfire Style” used by Kin’emon. This may be a distinct technique unique to Shanks.
3. Conqueror’s Haki (Haoshoku Haki) — With a single glare, Shanks knocked out multiple Vice-Admirals. His Conqueror’s Haki is on a level far above ordinary users.
4. Observation Haki Foresight — Like Katakuri, Shanks can see slightly into the future using advanced Kenbunshoku Haki.
5. Future-Hiding Ability — Perhaps his most unique power: Shanks can conceal his own future from his opponents’ Observation Haki. This makes him functionally invisible to those relying on future sight — an ability no other character has demonstrated.
The Mystery of Shanks’ Birth
In FILM RED, Shanks’ adopted daughter Uta is revealed to have been discovered inside a treasure chest — which Shanks had found and brought aboard. In a flashback, Roger and Rayleigh are shown looking into a treasure chest and finding a baby, strongly implying that baby is Shanks himself.
This means Shanks was already on Roger’s ship as an infant, and Roger likely gave him his name. This flashback is a pivotal moment that reshapes our understanding of Shanks’ origin.
What Is Shanks’ Bloodline?
The key question: who were Shanks’ biological parents? At the God Valley incident — where Shanks was found — the following groups were present:
① Rocks Pirates ② Roger Pirates ③ The Navy (under Vice Admiral Garp) ④ Celestial Dragons ⑤ Their slaves
Let’s eliminate the unlikely candidates:
Navy soldiers — Naval battleships don’t bring babies into combat zones. Highly unlikely.
Slaves — A slave’s child would itself be a slave, and would not be hidden away in a treasure box for safekeeping.
Pirates — Possible, but hiding a baby in a chest suggests the parents were trying to protect the child’s identity — which implies noble or high-status lineage.
That leaves the Celestial Dragons as the most likely candidates. And indeed, the Five Elders have confirmed that Shanks belongs to the Figarland Family — one of the most prominent bloodlines among the Celestial Dragons of Mary Geoise.
Shanks’ True Name Is “Figarland Shanks”
The Five Elders revealed that “Shanks” is not just a pirate alias — his true surname is Figarland. His full name is Figarland Shanks.
The Figarland Family is a major lineage within the World Nobles (Celestial Dragons) at Mary Geoise. This makes Shanks, one of the Four Emperors, a man with one foot in the pirate world and another in the most privileged class in the One Piece world.
The Meaning of “Figarland”
Breaking down “Figarland” etymologically:
“Figar” is likely derived from Old Norse or related Northern European roots, possibly meaning “frozen” or associated with ice and cold landscapes. Combined with “land” (meaning country or territory), “Figarland” could be interpreted as “Frozen Land” — pointing toward Iceland and, by extension, Norse mythology.
This connects Shanks’ homeland to the frozen north of real-world lore, suggesting the Figarland territory may be modeled after a Nordic island nation.
Shanks’ Character Model Is the Norse God Tyr
If Figarland = frozen island = Iceland = Norse mythology, then it follows that Shanks himself may be modeled after a figure from that mythology. The best candidate is Tyr, the ancient Norse god of war and justice.
Key parallels between Tyr and Shanks:
Tyr was the original supreme god in Norse mythology, before Odin’s prominence rose. He is the god of single combat and heroic glory — a fitting model for the mightiest of the Four Emperors.
Tuesday = Tyr’s Day — The word “Tuesday” comes from “Tyr’s Day,” just as Wednesday comes from Odin. In Roman tradition, Tyr corresponds to Mars (the war god and the red planet).
Tyr lost his arm to Fenrir — In Norse myth, Tyr sacrificed his sword arm so that the other gods could bind the great wolf Fenrir. Shanks also lost his arm — to the Sea King that attacked Luffy. This parallel is almost certainly intentional.
Figarland = Frozen Island = Niflheim
In Norse mythology, the World Tree Yggdrasil has three roots, each extending to a different realm:
① Urðr’s Well — in the realm of the gods (Ásgarðr) → likely Mary Geoise in One Piece
② Mímir’s Well — in the realm of the giants (Jötunheimr) → likely Elbaf, home of the giants
③ Hvergelmir — in Niflheim, the frozen underworld → likely Figarland, the frozen island
If this theory holds, the final arc of One Piece will be structured as a Ragnarök — the Norse apocalyptic battle. Mary Geoise (World Government / Celestial Dragons), Elbaf (giants), and Figarland (Shanks / the past) will each play a role in the world’s final confrontation.
The shadow of the World Tree was already hinted at in volume 86, and with Shanks’ true identity now revealed, the Norse mythology framework seems increasingly intentional. The final battle may be Oda’s version of Ragnarök itself.
