In this article, I’ll summarize everything that ONE PIECE FILM RED revealed about Shanks — from his fighting style and mysterious birth to the meaning of his family name.
Shanks’ Fighting Style
In 25 years of the series, Shanks had drawn his sword only twice: once in the standoff with Whitebeard, and once to protect Coby from Akainu. Yet in FILM RED, he had more fight scenes than Luffy himself.
What the film revealed about his combat style:
- Aerial movement (Moon Walk?)
- A flaming sword (Foxfire Style?)
- Conqueror’s Haki strong enough to knock out Marine Vice Admirals
- Advanced Observation Haki that sees the future — like Katakuri (?)
- An “Observation Haki Killer” — the ability to hide his own future from others
Is this “Observation Haki Killer” an advanced application of Conqueror’s Haki? Or — like Zetsu in HUNTER x HUNTER, where a fighter suppresses their aura entirely to become undetectable — is Shanks erasing his Haki to hide his presence?
Given that even the world’s greatest swordsman, Mihawk, considered Shanks his rival, he can presumably fire off massive Haki-imbued slashes — something like Getsuga Tensho from BLEACH.
If One Piece were a fighting game, Shanks would be the broken character who gets banned from tournaments.
The Mystery of Shanks’ Birth
When it’s revealed that Uta was found inside a treasure chest stolen by the Red Hair Pirates, Shanks has a memory flashback. In the memory, Roger and Rayleigh are peering down into a chest — and we’re seeing from inside, from the perspective of an infant. That infant is Shanks.
Shanks was found by Roger as a baby. And it’s almost certainly Roger who gave him the name “Shanks.”
What Is Shanks’ Bloodline?
Five groups were present at God Valley:
- The Rocks Pirates
- The Roger Pirates
- Marines led by Garp
- Celestial Dragons
- Slaves
If Shanks’ parents were among them, the most likely answer is the Celestial Dragons. Marines don’t bring infants on combat missions. A slave’s child wouldn’t be hidden in a treasure chest. And any Rocks Pirate would know better than to stash a child somewhere so easy to steal.
The scene parallels Corazon hiding Law from Doflamingo — someone who knew they might not survive concealing a child as a last resort. That points to a Celestial Dragon parent who hid their child during the chaos of the battle.
My theory: Garp rescued Celestial Dragons at God Valley, including a member of the Figarland family with distinctive red hair. The Marines reported both “the Rocks Pirates were destroyed” and “a Celestial Dragon child was kidnapped by the Roger Pirates.” The news spread through Mariejois. Decades later, when a red-haired pirate rose to fame and earned a bounty, the Five Elders recognized him. They invited him to Mariejois and offered him a life as a Celestial Dragon. He refused. But as the last surviving heir of the Figarland family — one of the Twenty Kingdoms — he was granted a rare exception: a pirate with access to Mariejois.
His Full Name: Figarland Shanks
After it’s revealed that Uta is Shanks’ daughter, the Five Elders have this exchange in the FILM RED novelization:
“We must eliminate Uta — a seed of revolution.”
“Even if she’s the daughter of the Figarland family?”
“…What did you just say!?”
At this point, they still believe Uta is Shanks’ biological daughter. Calling her “daughter of the Figarland family” means Shanks himself is a Figarland.
Shanks’ full name is Figarland Shanks, and his Celestial Dragon bloodline is essentially confirmed.
My guess: while most of the Figarland family survived God Valley, they were wiped out shortly after — perhaps from battle wounds. Shanks became the last heir. If he ever accepted the invitation to Mariejois, he’d immediately become the family’s head. Even as a pirate, he’s treated as the heir apparent — which explains his access to the Five Elders.
What Does “Figarland” Mean?
Montblanc Noland’s name comes from “No Land” — a man who claimed to find an island that no longer existed. In One Piece, character names often carry meaning tied to the story.
So what does “Figarland” mean?
Figarland = a frozen island. Shanks’ ancestors were kings of a frozen island. Antarctica seems like a stretch — but let’s follow the thread.
Shanks’ Model Is Norse Mythology’s Tyr
“Frozen island” leads to Iceland. Iceland leads to the Nordic countries. The Nordic countries lead to Norse mythology — the mythology of the Vikings, which Oda has called his favorite pirates of all time.
Today, Odin is considered the supreme god of Norse mythology — but in the oldest Germanic traditions, that title belonged to Tyr.
Tyr is the war god, and the root of the Greek god Ares and the Roman god Mars. “Mars” gives us the planet name. “Tyr” gives us Tuesday (Tyr’s day) — a word with fire connections across many languages.
Tyr is also famous for losing his right arm to the giant wolf Fenrir — just as Shanks lost his arm to a Sea King.
Figarland = Frozen Island = Niflheim
On this blog, I’ve written that One Piece is modeled on Norse mythology — and I’m confident about it.
The world tree Yggdrasil will almost certainly appear in the story. In Norse mythology, Yggdrasil has three roots, each reaching a different sacred well: one in the realm of the gods, one in the realm of the giants, and one in the frozen realm.
In One Piece, that maps to:
- Mariejois — the realm of the gods (Urd’s Well)
- Elbaf — the realm of the giants (Mimir’s Well)
- Figarland — the frozen island / Niflheim (Hvergelmir)

And if One Piece follows Norse mythology faithfully, Niflheim is home to Nidhogg — the great serpent that eternally gnaws at the roots of Yggdrasil.
Based on all of this, I believe the final battle of One Piece will be a Ragnarok homage. Now’s a good time to brush up on Norse mythology.
