Who Is Davy Jones?
“Davy Jones’s Locker” is a legend well-known among old sailors.
Davy Jones was a lying, greedy boatswain — cursed by the devil to live forever at the bottom of the sea. Every ship that sinks, every sailor who drowns, every treasure lost to the ocean goes straight into his Locker.
Now compare that to Rocks’s ambition: “I will become King of the World” — essentially claiming every ship, every sailor, every treasure as his own. The overlap is hard to miss.
Oda also split Davy Jones’s traits across two Straw Hats: Usopp (the lying boatswain) and Nami (the greedy one who hoards every treasure). To Oda, Davy Jones is the very archetype of a pirate.
Digging Into the Name “Xebec”
Rocks’s surname, “Xebec,” refers to a three-masted Mediterranean sailing ship.
Three masts — the number 3. Keep that number in mind.
The kanji for “abyss” (深淵) appears in Xebec’s attack names. “Abyss” and “the deep sea (Davy Jones’s Locker)” share the same essence: bottomless, unknowable depth. The naming is deliberate.
The True Identity of Xebec’s Wife, Eris
Xebec’s wife is named “Eris” — modeled on Eris, the Greek goddess of discord.
In Greek mythology, Eris threw the Golden Apple of Discord, setting off the Trojan War. Wherever Eris appears, catastrophic conflict follows. True to her name, the God Valley Incident — the cataclysmic battle in the “Valley of the Gods” — is the perfect expression of what her presence brings.
There’s also a strong theory that Eris is a Fish-Man. In Disney’s depiction, Davy Jones has the face of an octopus. If Rocks worshipped Davy Jones-as-octopus, it’s not a stretch to imagine he fell for an octopus Fish-Man.
Octopuses have three hearts and three brains. In the One Piece community, the leading theory for why Blackbeard can eat multiple Devil Fruits is that his body is structurally different from a normal human — and being part octopus Fish-Man would explain exactly that.
Which opens the door to this theory: Eris, wife of Rocks D. Xebec, was an octopus Fish-Man.
This Is Why Blackbeard Can Eat Multiple Devil Fruits
Marshall D. Teach (Blackbeard) carries the blood of the Buccaneer tribe through his father, Rocks.
If his mother Eris was an octopus Fish-Man, then Teach is a Buccaneer × Octopus Fish-Man hybrid.
Octopuses have three hearts. Their body structure is fundamentally different from a normal human’s — which is why eating multiple Devil Fruits doesn’t destroy him.
Xebec’s “three masts,” the octopus’s “three hearts,” and the potential “third Devil Fruit” Blackbeard may still be hunting — if the number 3 is the running theme of the Xebec bloodline, every dot connects into one clean line.
