Conditions for Haki Awakening
Haki is a power latent in every human being across the entire world…
Yet most people live and die without ever realizing that power… or without being able to draw it out.
“Not doubting” — that is “strength.”
These are the words Rayleigh spoke to Luffy at the start of his two-year training.
Sudden Awakening
In the Dressrosa arc, when Sugar’s grasp was closing in on Luffy, Usopp’s Observation Haki suddenly awakened out of nowhere.
The conditions when Koby’s and Usopp’s Observation Haki awakened were…
- Koby: crushed by intense stress as fellow marines kept dying meaningless deaths one after another
- Usopp: gripped by the intense stress of knowing that if he didn’t stop Sugar, Luffy would be erased from everyone’s memory
The pattern is clear: when pushed to the limit under intense stress, Observation Haki awakens.
Observation Haki is probably the easiest type to awaken. Armament Haki, by contrast, seems to require dedicated training.
So then — how does Conqueror’s Haki awaken?
Rage: The Trigger for Sanji’s Conqueror’s Haki
During blindfolded training to sense presences, Luffy flailed around and knocked over Rayleigh’s food — and Rayleigh got angry.
At that moment, he said half-jokingly: “Anger is also Haki.” I believe this is the exact condition for Conqueror’s Haki to awaken — raw, uncontrollable rage.
A precedent from the Egghead arc:
Zoro was struggling against Lucci when Sanji called him “deadweight” — and Zoro erupted in fury, unleashing Conqueror’s Haki on the spot.
Zoro had no idea he possessed Conqueror’s Haki until Gaban told him. So in Egghead, what actually happened was: he coincidentally blew up at Sanji’s words, that pure rage triggered his Conqueror’s Haki, and that’s what allowed him to defeat Lucci.
Following this logic, Sanji’s Conqueror’s Haki awakening will require the same kind of explosion — he’d need to reach the same level of fury as when he found out Absalom had been spying on Nami in the bath.
Conqueror’s Haki Is Contagious
Every time Luffy has used Conqueror’s Haki, the word “資質” (innate aptitude) has been applied to him. But when Gaban was asked whether Sanji has Conqueror’s Haki, he said Sanji “should have 素質 (latent potential).”
The distinction between “資質” and “素質” matters:
- 資質 → Already possessed and actively expressed (Luffy’s case)
- 素質 → Potential that exists but hasn’t bloomed yet (Sanji’s case)
Luffy was born with Conqueror’s Haki, and it had already awakened around the Flying Fish Riders arc — that’s 資質. Sanji’s Conqueror’s Haki, on the other hand, exists as dormant 素質 — present but not yet ignited.
But why was Gaban so confident that Sanji should have it?
That confidence, I believe, reveals the secret behind how Gaban and Rayleigh became Conqueror’s Haki users themselves.
The answer: Conqueror’s Haki is contagious.
Gaban and Rayleigh caught Roger’s Conqueror’s Haki through their time with him, and became users themselves. By the same mechanism, Luffy’s Conqueror’s Haki has been spreading to Sanji — and Gaban could sense it.
Zoro’s Conqueror’s Haki, however, came from a different source: Oden.
Oden’s Conqueror’s Haki Spreads to Zoro
When Zoro attacked with Oden’s sword Enma, Kaido sensed something unsettling.
“Why does that man’s blade carry Oden’s presence!?” — Kaido was clearly picking up Oden’s Haki flowing from Zoro.
My theory: when Enma first forcibly drained Zoro’s Haki, and when Zoro overpowered it and took it back, Oden’s Conqueror’s Haki entered Zoro’s body in the exchange.
That’s what gave Zoro the head start — becoming a Conqueror’s Haki user before Sanji.
