The cover story composition this week closely resembles the second half of Ch.828 — the scene where Vinsmoke Ichiji and Niji appeared for the first time. The first-page giant with broccoli-shaped hair is planted as a visual cue: the broccoli refers to the “Broccoli Island civil war” that Ichiji and Niji once ended. It’s a setup for the scene that’s coming.
“How Dare You Do This to Our Children” — “How Dare You Do This to Our Country”
Brogy directing his rage at the God’s Knights for using the children as hostages and throwing Elbaf into chaos — that line maps directly onto the defeated faction’s cry after Germa’s intervention in Ch.828: “How dare you do this to our country.” Composition, emotion, and target of rage all align perfectly.
The Devil’s Contract — Red and Blue
Im-sama’s ability: “Diabolical Contract (Ah-Quaol)” triggering “Dark Reversal Domination (Domi-Reversi)” — Doryblo transformed into demons. This is also a homage to the four-page sequence at the end of Ch.828. Im-sama (self-proclaimed god) activating a “devil’s contract” maps to the scene in Ch.828 where the self-proclaimed “god” set similar conditions.
Broggy as the Red Demon, Dorry as the Blue Demon — both stripped of reason and ruled by brute force. This mirrors Vinsmoke Ichiji (red) and Niji (blue), born without emotions through genetic manipulation. Hair color matches the Dori-Bro nicknames. The parallel is deliberate down to the color scheme.
Life in Exchange
Ch.829 (immediately following 828): Big Mom in a craving episode forced her son to choose between “Life (lifespan)” or “Treat (gifts).” Im-sama’s “Diabolical Contract” trades lifespan for immortal power and physical strength — structurally the same bargain as Big Mom’s demand.
And Ch.830 (the chapter after): Aladdin appeared carrying a trident. The demons that Dorry and the giant subordinates became — under “Dark Reversal Domination” — were also carrying tridents. The weapon links the arcs: Elbaf → Whole Cake Island → Impel Down, all connected through the trident shape.
Going further: tridents, devil-like wings and horns — those describe Impel Down’s Hannyabal and Saldeath. And last chapter established the Gaban/Buggy parallel from Impel Down. Broggy’s demonized form uses a double-bladed axe, the same shape as Buggy’s weapon in Impel Down. The weapon design connects Elbaf, Whole Cake Island, and Impel Down as a unified self-homage chain.
This is the core pleasure of self-homage analysis: not just noting that two things “look similar,” but identifying exactly which chapter number corresponds to which element, and which specific details — composition, color, dialogue, weapons — are being intentionally recycled. That precision is what makes Oda’s layered construction visible.
