Cover Story Theory: Completely Confirmed
Yamato’s cover story Vol.17: “Took a nap and got my sword stolen.” While Yamato and Otama are sleeping, a shadow sneaks off with Koushirou’s sword. This is unmistakably a Robin homage. Here’s the breakdown:
- Sword thief → the Tontatta in Dressrosa, who robbed people through trickery
- Sleeping with arms spread wide → Robin pinned down and unable to move by Leo’s Nui Nui (Stitch-Stitch) ability
- Vol.17 → Vol.71 homage (the Dressrosa arc began around volume 71)
- Tiny Tontatta tribe meeting the much-larger Robin → Giants meeting Luffy in the main story (Loki meets Luffy)
- Loki being crucified (chained and imprisoned) in the main story → Robin immobilized by the Nui Nui ability
This is a direct confirmation. The theory that Yamato’s cover story is a digest of Luffy’s adventures is now locked in. The Robin chapter in the sequence is verified. Next in line: Franky’s introduction arc. Let’s see how Oda frames that one.
Mountain-Beard Yarle — 408 Years Old
Gerz threatened the crew: “I’ll tell Yarle-sama about this!” In Big Mom’s flashback from 63 years ago, Yarle was already 345 years old. Add 63 and he’s 408 now.
Four hundred years ago is when Noland’s travel diary was written — the very document that Usopp’s ancestor Noland kept as he traveled the seas and was later used to “prove” he was a liar when Jaya sank. A 408-year-old giant who’s been around since then would have seen things nobody else remembers. Could Yarle and Noland have actually met? The setup for that reveal feels too clean to be accidental.
Message from Vivi
Quick context recap: after leaving Wano, the Straw Hats picked up a newspaper carrying three devastating headlines: the Revolutionary Army had declared war on the World Nobles; Sabo had allegedly assassinated King Cobra of Alabasta; and Princess Vivi had gone missing. Then, during the Egghead arc, a second newspaper arrived — and encoded within it was Vivi’s survival message, along with a hint of her location.
A Message Only Nakama Would Understand
The message was hidden in the photo of Luffy’s left arm printed in the newspaper — specifically, an X mark drawn onto it. That X is the Marineford solidarity mark: the symbol the crew tattooed on themselves during the Sabaody arc as a sign that they’d meet again. Only the Straw Hats would recognize it immediately.
Reading the X mark, the message Vivi embedded carries two pieces of information:
- “I’m alive” — the survival report the crew had been waiting for
- “I’m with Morgan” — Morgan is the only person who can tamper with newspapers on this scale, meaning Vivi is aboard the ship of the journalist who defied the World Government by publishing Nika’s photo worldwide
The subtext: Morgan is also a fugitive from the government now. Vivi is sailing with him. The unspoken third message: come find me.
The Model for Elbaf’s Royal Family
The Elbaf king’s name “Harald” is the Scandinavian pronunciation — in Swedish it becomes “Harald.” In actual history, two kings named Harald stand out: Harald Fairhair, the first king to unify Norway, and Harald III “Hardrada”, called “the last great king of the Viking Age.”
Since Elbaf is explicitly modeled on Viking culture, Harald III — the last great Viking — feels like the stronger candidate. Which raises an interesting geographic question: the LEGO country earlier seemed to be modeled on Denmark, while Elbaf proper might be Sweden. Or Oda may be drawing from a pan-Scandinavian aesthetic rather than any specific country’s borders.
Loki and Hiluluk
King Harald’s biological son is Prince Loki. But Carsey mentioned: “That one (Hiluluk) is technically also a ‘son of the king.'” Loki was born 63 years ago — which is when Big Mom was staying at Elbaf. Before Loki’s birth, Harald had no heir. Like the Kozuki family designating a retainer’s son as heir apparent, Hiluluk was likely selected as the king’s adopted son and designated successor.
That would make Loki and Hiluluk adoptive brothers — with Loki being the biological prince who arrived later. Does Hiluluk carry elements of Thor? In the MCU’s Thor, Thor is Odin’s real son and Loki is adopted. But in actual Norse mythology, Loki is Odin’s blood brother through a pact, while Thor is his real son — a considerably more complicated relationship.
Oda seems to be mapping this triangle onto the Elbaf royal family: King Harald = Odin, Hiluluk = Thor, Loki = Loki. The tension between biological and adoptive succession, between the “true” heir and the designated one, is exactly the kind of structural conflict Oda builds entire arcs around.
